About Homelessness
The Melville Trust's national grantee partners are experts on the causes and solutions to homelessness. We strongly recommend exploring their websites to learn more about homelessness:
What is Homelessness?
The National Alliance to End Homelessness is an advocacy group promoting programs and policies that prevent and end homelessness. Their FAQ section is an excellent primer on homelessness - definitions, causes and potential solutions.
What is Supportive Housing?
The Melville Trust advocates supportive housing as a true solution to homelessness. Supportive housing is a successful, cost-effective combination of affordable housing with services that helps people live more stable, productive lives. Supportive housing works well for people who face the most complex challenges - individuals and families who are not only homeless, but who also have very low incomes and serious, persistent issues that may include substance use, mental illness, and HIV/AIDS. The Corporation for Supportive Housing is a leading voice advocating this practical and effective solution.
Community Solutions
In many communities across the country, municipal, nonprofit and private agencies are coming together to collaborate about finding and implementing solutions to homelessness. The results are local "10 Year Plans to End Homelessness." Is there a 10-Year Plan in your community? Find out.
